Big Finish Announce War Doctor Audio Adventures

Following a brief Twitter and Facebook publicity campaign, Big Finish have this morning announced that John Hurt will join their roster of Doctors from December 2015.

The first round of adventures for the War Doctor will comprise four three-hour boxsets. The first of these is entitled Only the Monstrous and will be out in time for Christmas.

This initial set contains three episodes, all written and directed by Big Finish executive producer and regular contributor Nick Briggs. The first is called The Innocent, the second The Thousand Worlds and The Heart of Battle.

Regular Big Finish listeners should be enthused that Howard Carter seems to be onboard once more to contribute music and sound design to the series, whilst Tom Webster will be contibuting another four covers to his impressive portfolio (see above).

Jacqueline Pearce will join Hurt as Time Lord Cardinal Ollistra, an arch manipulator waging the Time War against the Daleks.

But that's not all - Only the Monstrous will be followed in February by the second volume of the War Doctor's adventures, Infernal Devices. This second round of stories is set to be written by Phil Mulryne and old hands John Dorney and Matt Fitton. The last two volumes are currently in pre-production, with release dates yet to be announced.

And there's even more! In November 2017 - six months after the conclusion of the sixteen-adventure saga Doom Coalition which is due to start this month, and over two years from now - a prequel boxset to these four War Doctor sets will be released. The Time War, starring Paul McGann as the eighth Doctor, will follow the early stages of the eponymous battle, with fans speculating it will lead neatly into 2013 TV mini-episode The Night of the Doctor, which saw McGann regenerate into Hurt.

“What an utter privilege it is to work with such an iconic actor, playing such a brilliantly devised role,” says producer David Richardson. “This is Doctor Who at its darkest — the era in which our hero casts aside his core values in order to try and save the galaxy in its most terrible hour. We promise bold and brilliant story-telling with gripping character drama, and epic and cinematic audio productions.”

You can pre-order all five of the aforementioned sets (all directed by Briggs) for £20 each - on CD or download - right now over at the Big Finish website: click here for the War Doctor; click here for the Eighth Doctor. Please also note that you can get the whole saga in one £100 bundle.
